New Englanders within the context of New England; 3) collect the literary and artistic contributions of children's authors and illustrators working within New England with New England as a particular topic or theme of their work; 4) provide a browsing and, whenever possible, a circulating collection where children and their parents and educators may discover materials directly relating to the human and natural environment of New England.

Some emphasis may be given to works from or about Massachusetts. Pure factual books will be collected only when they serve to answer questions of special interest to children or educate them on issues of current interest relating to the area. This collection makes no effort to collect all the works of any one author or illustrator past or present, or all materials relating to NThis collection is compiled of both current and older literature, which illustrates and interprets the New England area and its peoples to children and young adults in the present and past. This collection is designed to: 1) preserve older materials written for children of all ages which reflect attitudes, and mores of past generations of New Englanders; 2) collect new materials which reflect attitudes and mores of present generations of Neew England or Massachusetts for children. Books about natural history or the environment may not specifically be written about New England but may still directly interpret the natural history of the area at a child's level. This collection is to consist of books only, other materials being added to the regular collection as needed, and will be maintained by funds from the Youth Services budget.

In order to preserve older materials, items that are out of print when added to the collection will not circulate. The New England Collection may include titles also purchased for the regular collection.

Frank Asch: 2009 New England Author of the Year
Asch’s simple picture books evoke the New England landscape. Best known for his
Moonbear series, which are dearly loved for their vibrant illustrations and engaging stories.

His website is great fun for children.
Gail Gibbons: 2008 New England Author of the Year
The author of over 135 non-fiction books, Gibbons has "taught more preschoolers and early readers than any other children's writer illustrator" says the Washington Post.
Gibbon's most recent books is Tornados!
Virginia Lee Burton: 2007 New England Author of the Year
Burton's best loved works include Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Little House,
for which she won the 1943 Caldecott Medal. She was born in Newton, MA.
Jan Brett: 2006 New England Author of the Year
Jan Brett was born in Massachusetts where she still lives. She is the author and illustrator of many books, including Comet's Nine Lives about the island of Nantucket.
Brett's newest book is Gingerbread Friends.
Steven Kellogg: 2005 New England Author of the Year
Author and illustrator of the Pinkerton series and Johnny Appleseed and many other stories.

Dr. Seuss: 2004 New England Author of the Year

D. B. Johnson : 2002 New England Author of the Year
